Revelation Film Festival

We love submarine movies…not sure why – we just do – so this thrilling film is a must see recommendation.

One of the best Scandi directors around, Thomas Vinterberg, crafts a nail biting drama based on the sinking of the Kursk submarine during Russian naval exercises in August 2000. After a catastrophic explosion on board, the vessel rapidly sank to the bottom of the Barents Sea where it lay awaiting rescue.

After what could only be described as a shambolic response to the disaster in launching a rescue operation for the trapped seamen, the Russian government grappled with distraught families with the entire incident played out on international television, including the drugging of agitated family in front of the gathered media.

Vinterberg captures the atmosphere brilliantly as the crewmen struggle to stay calm and survive against the odds in the confined compartment of the stricken vessel and in so doing, creates a tightly-wound drama that hits from the start.

Back by popular demand! How do you navigate intimate and sexual scenes in film and television shoots whilst maintaining a safe working environment?

Following the recent changes to the Screen Australia code of conduct, and the continued development of the #metoo movement, preventing sexual harassment and providing a safe work environment is essential on film and television shoots.

Actors, directors, producers, writers and crew are invited to learn best practice approaches to intimacy, simulated sex scenes, and nudity. This three hour specialist workshop will demonstrate how you can use a simple and effective process to rehearse any intimate scene.

The workshop will be run by WIFT WA co-founder, casting director, acting coach and intimacy coordinator, Annie Murtagh-Monks (Last Train to Freo, Drift, The Heights).

In an eerie and nuanced take on the ‘last man alive’ scenario, The Quiet Earth is a gem of under-the-radar New Zealand science fiction cinema. This beautifully shot kiwi film explores the aftermath of a catastrophic scientific experiment to create a new source of energy, which inadvertently ‘disappears’ all humans from the face of the planet – bar the three main characters. For the first third of the film we see only one human; middle-aged scientist Zac Hobson, who wanders the empty cityscapes and towns, rollicking between debauched indulgence and desperate loneliness as he searches for other signs of life.

Made in 1985 this film has become something of a cult classic. Eschewing the action and heroism we expect from this genre, The Quiet Earth is a brooding exploration of the post-apocalyptic narrative.

Screening as a complimentary film program as part of the Other Suns exhibition at the Fremantle Arts Centre.

Last year, seven titles with Irish connections were nominated for Oscars.

This is a remarkable feat for a country of five million people. Ireland is currently reaping the reward of government policies that support arts businesses and nurture the storytelling skills that our country is known for.

Join Dr Enda Murray to discuss the three films he is introducing at Revelation, films that are quite representative of where Irish film is at at the moment.

Black ’47 looks at Irish history and tells a uniquely Irish story about our past. Unquiet Graves is a hard-hitting documentary which unpicks the horrific narrative of our recent politics and the third, Metal Heart, is a commercial comedy which could be located anywhere on the planet but it’s set in Dublin and told in a uniquely Irish way using Irish craft and skill.

This presentation looks at the recent successes in Irish cinema and the strategies and policies that have enabled these to happen.

When Robb (Jeremy Pickett) takes a beating from his own gang of White Supremacists to protect Machot (Victor Soloman), an African Australian immigrant caught graffitiing over the gang’s tag, they are forced to confront the pain of their shared past. Through Robb and Machot’s journey, Murals explores themes of forgiveness, death and the ability of art as a means of connection.

This session is for parents of young actors who wish (or have) signed up with a talent agency. Filmbites Talent Agency Director Hallie Mckeig and Head of Acting Shanta Surendran will provide an overview of the local and national screen industry as it relates to young actors.

The session will focus on the expectations for actors striving for a career in the industry and on how parents can help their child enjoy their acting journey, stay resilient and maximise their chances of succeeding.

Filmbites is Perth’s own screen skills training specialists for young people, with after-school courses, community workshops and talent agency divisions.

For the first year ever we’re bringing to you this unique filmmaking/music collaboration.

The idea is simple…

1. Filmmakers get to choose a song from a list supplied to us by more than 50 local musicians, DJs or groups.

2. Make a video.

3. Submit that sucker.

4. Get judged.

5. Come to the screening!

Some bands are involved, some are not and in most instances the bands will have no idea what the clip will look like. If everyone’s happy the clip might become the bands official video and the filmmakers rocketed to international creative stardom! (or something like that).

The screening will take place on a special evening at Freo.Social and judged by a panel of esteemed industry and filmy types in a night that’s bound to be full of a ton of surprises and lots of cool activity.

Anyone under 18 attending must be accompanied by an adult.

Revelation Academic returns – a hot house of ideas and inspiration, driven by many academics and researchers in film, moving image arts, interactive media, media, and culture studies. Conference papers have included traditional and radical presentation techniques, panel discussions, short film screenings, and even performance lectures, creating an event that is always inspiring and exciting, stimulating and essential.

This year, to celebrate XR:WA, the event will take place at The Backlot Perth (Thursday 11th) and The Pan Pacific Hotel (Friday 12th).

Admission includes a light lunch and drinks on Friday evening, as well as cinema tickets.

Cost: $150 (+ Booking Fee) for both days

One of the great pleasures of this year’s event is the ability to throw the doors open to one of the sector’s most interesting spaces: Curtin University’s HIVE (Hub for Immersive Visualisation and eResearch).

Our partners at Curtin are hosting welcoming drinks for conference delegates and the public at this surprising space. The event will include drinks and finger food and access to the gallery to experience their stunning range of hands-on exhibits and research.

This rare experience is a must for anyone wanting to explore this fabulous space and where research in this immersive visualisation are heading. From art and architecture, medicine and science, space exploration and archeology, it’s all here and living in front of your eyes.

Delegates will be collected by bus from the Pan Pacific Hotel at 5pm on Thursday July 11 and returned at 7.30pm.

On Exactitude in Science is a two screen video installation, featuring a synchronized presentation of Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi (1982) & Alan Butler’s Koyaanisgtav (2017).

On Exactitude in Science takes its name from the Jorge Luis Borges short story, Del rigor en la ciencia (1946). This passage describes an ancient, fictional civilization that creates a 1:1 scale map of their territory. Borges, who annotated this text under a pseudonym, in fact based the work on an extract from a Lewis Carroll work first published in 1889.

Using two video screens, this installation comprises the Godfrey Reggio motion picture Koyaanisqatsi (1982), presented in synchronicity with Alan Butler’s shot-for-shot remake Koyaanisgtav (2017). The work by Reggio was chosen by Butler as a cultural artifact, and a paragon of the most popular visual media of the 20th century, film. The original motion picture does not follow a formal screenplay as such, instead embodies a poetic, pictorial mode of documentary film-making. Using Koyaanisqatsi as a screenplay itself, Butler has stunningly transposed this work into a new form using the virtual worlds within the Grand Theft Auto video game series.

Always surprising and an impressive work by anyone’s standards.

Taking place throughout the event at the Spacecubed Games and Experience Emporium, you’ll be able to explore some of the freshest ideas from some of WA’s new digital practitioners alongside some of our internationally recognised.

Curated by games expert Dr Kate Raynes-Goldie, Play Up Perth has established a considerable reputation as the key meeting and testing ground for locally produced games work.

Since 2013, Playup Perth has supported the development and launch of over 100 locally made games and creative innovations, helping them to connect with the $110bn (USD) global market. Games tested or showcased at PlayupPerth have gone on to receive national and international attention and accolades, including two Australian Game Developer Awards, OOMPF Games funding and Amcom Upstart funding.

Playup Perth was founded in 2013 by Kate Raynes-Goldie to provide a resource for local game creators and innovators to get feedback on their work in progress. In partnership with the Film and Television Institute and SK Games, Playup Perth grew into a monthly social night that connected creators and the public not only for feedback but also to showcase and raise the profile of local talent.

As a spirit guide takes you to a vibrant underworld and introduces you to the traditional custodians of a land now threatened by the encroaching modern world – mining in particular – you will visit individual Thalu (sacred sites) for flora, fauna and the elements before continuing on to the world of Mingkala the Creator

Noise Drawers is a VR game in which you play a totally new form of instrument. Surrounded by walls of drawers, each of which has a different, unique sound, you reach and interact with them, opening and closing them in various expressive ways to create music.

The player stand in a four walled room, covered in drawers. There are three main kinds of drawer:
Tape drawers, when you open it, it plays an audio clip as it winds itself shut again.
Expressive drawers, where according to how fast or slow you open the drawer, the audio clip will be more or less intense.
Loop drawers, where the length of an open drawer signifies the volume of the audio loop coming from it.
A wonderful exploration of the nature of sound.

Using the latest Augmented Reality (AR) technology, you download the EyeJack app and wave your phone over the artworks, and watch as they change, move, grow and morph before your eyes. The results range from subtle to striking.

Featuring the work of 45 artists from around the world, Prosthetic Reality captures the first wave artists, animators and sound designers exploring the intersection of technology and art through AR.

The exhibition has been described by VICE as “the most ambitious AR art project” to date, and was winner of the 2017 Auggie Award for ‘Best in Show’.

Taking place as part of the XR:WA VR Showcase Theatre

RONE is a distinctive portrait of the world famous street artist. The 360′ film and interactive VR art gallery take the viewer inside Rone’s world. We follow him into the rarely-explored spaces in which he works – an abandoned paper mill, a house set for demolition, a crumbling theatre and more. The VR experience also transports the viewer into a Rone exhibition and inside his studio, giving them a front-row seat to the artistic process behind his epic murals. Most of the murals and buildings in the experience have since been destroyed. Through RONE you can now experience these lost works.

The interactive RONE experience consists of a virtual gallery where you wander through and explore Rone’s works on the walls and listen to an audio tour. At the end of the gallery you find a large orb where the 360’ video documentary begins. After the film new rooms are unlocked to explore; revealing more information, art works and films.

The award winning RONE has toured to festivals around the world including SXSW, Cannes NEXT and the New York Film Festival.

Revelation Academic returns – a hot house of ideas and inspiration, driven by many academics and researchers in film, moving image arts, interactive media, media, and culture studies. Conference papers have included traditional and radical presentation techniques, panel discussions, short film screenings, and even performance lectures, creating an event that is always inspiring and exciting, stimulating and essential.

This year, to celebrate XR:WA, the event will take place at The Backlot Perth (Thursday 11th) and The Pan Pacific Hotel (Friday 12th).

Simply defined as “the art and science of making measurements from photographs, especially for recovering the exact positions of surface points”, Photogrammetry might be as old as photography itself,, but in a new medium like VR, it’s a whole other science.

Acclaimed Photogrammetry expert Luke Gibbs (Kokoda) comes to XR:WA from the Immersive Media Unit at the ABC to present this special workshop examining the principles and techniques behind this element of VR which is a central focus in working with location based forms.

Using the making Kokoda and all its on location difficulty as case study, this workshop is essential for practitioners expecting to work in the most inhospitable of locations and in getting to the numb of this mysterious art!

An exhilarating and visceral film that tells the expansive story of Carriberrie: Indigenous Australian song and dance. Beginning with a stunning passage from the highly acclaimed Sydney Opera House peformance, Bennelong, by Australia’s premier Aboriginal dance theatre group Bangarra, actor and performer David Gulpilil welcomes us on a concentric, snake-like journey through time and space.

We travel from traditional ceremonial dance and song, towards intrinsically contemporary and modern expressions. Intimate, immersive and breath-taking, this documentary showcases a stunning range of Australian locations and performances from iconic ceremonial traditional dance in Uluru, through to food gathering dances in the rain forrest, war songs on the most northern tip of Australia and funeral songs in the Arnhem wetlands before culminating with a highly charged hunting track in the central desert.

Taking place throughout the event at the Spacecubed Games and Experience Emporium, you’ll be able to explore some of the freshest ideas from some of WA’s new digital practitioners alongside some of our internationally recognised.

Curated by games expert Dr Kate Raynes-Goldie, Play Up Perth has established a considerable reputation as the key meeting and testing ground for locally produced games work.

Since 2013, Playup Perth has supported the development and launch of over 100 locally made games and creative innovations, helping them to connect with the $110bn (USD) global market. Games tested or showcased at PlayupPerth have gone on to receive national and international attention and accolades, including two Australian Game Developer Awards, OOMPF Games funding and Amcom Upstart funding.

Playup Perth was founded in 2013 by Kate Raynes-Goldie to provide a resource for local game creators and innovators to get feedback on their work in progress. In partnership with the Film and Television Institute and SK Games, Playup Perth grew into a monthly social night that connected creators and the public not only for feedback but also to showcase and raise the profile of local talent.

On Exactitude in Science is a two screen video installation, featuring a synchronized presentation of Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi (1982) & Alan Butler’s Koyaanisgtav (2017).

On Exactitude in Science takes its name from the Jorge Luis Borges short story, Del rigor en la ciencia (1946). This passage describes an ancient, fictional civilization that creates a 1:1 scale map of their territory. Borges, who annotated this text under a pseudonym, in fact based the work on an extract from a Lewis Carroll work first published in 1889.

Using two video screens, this installation comprises the Godfrey Reggio motion picture Koyaanisqatsi (1982), presented in synchronicity with Alan Butler’s shot-for-shot remake Koyaanisgtav (2017). The work by Reggio was chosen by Butler as a cultural artifact, and a paragon of the most popular visual media of the 20th century, film. The original motion picture does not follow a formal screenplay as such, instead embodies a poetic, pictorial mode of documentary film-making. Using Koyaanisqatsi as a screenplay itself, Butler has stunningly transposed this work into a new form using the virtual worlds within the Grand Theft Auto video game series.

Always surprising and an impressive work by anyone’s standards.

Beginning with a stunning passage from the highly acclaimed Sydney Opera House peformance, Bennelong, by Australia’s premier Aboriginal dance theatre group Bangarra, actor and performer David Gulpilil welcomes us on a concentric, snake-like journey through time and space.

We travel from traditional ceremonial dance and song, towards intrinsically contemporary and modern expressions. Intimate, immersive and breath-taking, this documentary showcases a stunning range of Australian locations and performances from iconic ceremonial traditional dance in Uluru, through to food gathering dances in the rain forrest, war songs on the most northern tip of Australia and funeral songs in the Arnhem wetlands before culminating with a highly charged hunting track in the central desert.

Something has happened in a small town in the American South West. Almost everybody has died, their blood dried into a powder. What follows remains one of the most unique science fiction films made, as a team of research scientists located in a subterranean bunker try discover what has happened to the townsfolk, and the true nature of a microscopic alien organism known as Andromeda.

Based on the book by Michael Crichton, best known for Westworld, Coma, and Jurassic Park, and directed by Robert Wise The Haunting, The Sound of Music, Star Trek The Motion Picture, The Andromeda Strain remains a classic of the genre.

Prosthetic Reality invites you to think about what the future of art might look like.

Using the latest Augmented Reality (AR) technology, you download the EyeJack app and wave your phone over the artworks, and watch as they change, move, grow and morph before your eyes. The results range from subtle to striking.

Featuring the work of 45 artists from around the world, Prosthetic Reality captures the first wave artists, animators and sound designers exploring the intersection of technology and art through AR.

The exhibition has been described by VICE as “the most ambitious AR art project” to date, and was winner of the 2017 Auggie Award for ‘Best in Show’.

A Virtual Reality experience that explores the spiritual underworld of the Ngarluma Aboriginal people of Northern Western Australia. .Directed by Tyson Mowarin, with visuals and Art Direction by Sutu Eats Flies.

As a spirit guide takes you to a vibrant underworld and introduces you to the traditional custodians of a land now threatened by the encroaching modern world – mining in particular – you will visit individual Thalu (sacred sites) for flora, fauna and the elements before continuing on to the world of Mingkala the Creator

On Exactitude in Science is a two screen video installation, featuring a synchronized presentation of Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi (1982) & Alan Butler’s Koyaanisgtav (2017).

On Exactitude in Science takes its name from the Jorge Luis Borges short story, Del rigor en la ciencia (1946). This passage describes an ancient, fictional civilization that creates a 1:1 scale map of their territory. Borges, who annotated this text under a pseudonym, in fact based the work on an extract from a Lewis Carroll work first published in 1889.

Using two video screens, this installation comprises the Godfrey Reggio motion picture Koyaanisqatsi (1982), presented in synchronicity with Alan Butler’s shot-for-shot remake Koyaanisgtav (2017). The work by Reggio was chosen by Butler as a cultural artifact, and a paragon of the most popular visual media of the 20th century, film. The original motion picture does not follow a formal screenplay as such, instead embodies a poetic, pictorial mode of documentary film-making. Using Koyaanisqatsi as a screenplay itself, Butler has stunningly transposed this work into a new form using the virtual worlds within the Grand Theft Auto video game series.

Always surprising and an impressive work by anyone’s standards.
