“When I’m a man I going to fight for rights for black people... and I’ll try to speak to the Prime Minister. I’m gonna say, STOP KILLING ABORIGINAL PEOPLE.” - Dujuan, aged 10⁣
The vital Australian documentary, 'In My Blood It Runs', was made by a passionate and talented team, including Stellar 2020 guest judge, Sophie Hyde.⁣ It's free-to-air premiere is on ABC TV + iview on Sunday 5 July at 9:30pm or you can visit for options on how you can watch it now.
It’s well past time to amplify black voices. If you’re unsure of how to respond to current events: listen, research, donate. It’s not good enough for us to turn away from what is happening.⁣
Synopsis of ‘In My Blood It Runs’: Ten-year-old Dujuan is a child-healer, a good hunter and speaks three languages. As he shares his wisdom of history and the complex world around him we see his spark and intelligence. Yet Dujuan is ‘failing’ in school and facing increasing scrutiny from welfare and the police. As he travels perilously close to incarceration, his family fight to give him a strong Arrernte education alongside his western education lest he becomes another statistic. We walk with him as he grapples with these pressures, shares his truths and somewhere in-between finds space to dream, imagine and hope for his future self.
