SIMON FOSTER, FIRST MATE, SIGNING OFF....

"After three years as Program Director of SciFi Film Festival, I'll be leaving the role after the 2020 event."

"I've had three incredible years in a gig that has been so much fun, and I have Festival Director Tom Papas to thank for all of that. He allowed full freedom in the programming role to someone who had no better qualifications than a love of scifi and some experience watching others do it. I totally acknowledge his faith in me which, to varying degrees (the success of Nekrotronic, Prospect, Miracle Mile (1988), NORMAN - A Joel Guelzo Film; the 'ambitious' programming of Star; the year-to-year growth across all KPIs), I hope I've lived up to."

"Tom is forming an amazing team to take the festival onto its next phase and I know all those he'll inspire in the future will see the event grow exponentially."

"This year's line-up of films is perhaps the strongest overall program of my tenure. Remarkably, the vast majority of titles have come via the festival's FilmFreeway submission portal, indicating the global community is seeking the festival out as an avenue for their work. I count that as a win."

"Thank you to all the incredible creative minds that I've had the enormous pleasure and honour to meet and that I now call friends, not least Craig Walker and his amazing team. Your work is inspiring and visionary."

"And a huge thank you to Event Cinemas and the team at the George Street venue for tolerating my inexperience and making everything run smoothly (or, at the very least, appearing to)."

"I will continue as Managing Editor of the film industry website Screen-Space and remain as Festival Director of Monster Fest (Sydney), so please don't be a stranger."
COVID-19 STATEMENT
2020 SUBMISSIONS TO BE SUSPENDED
SUNDAY APRIL 5 at 11:59pm

The organisers and partners of the 2020 SciFi Film Festival are monitoring and adhering to the Australian Federal Government's guidelines and recommendations on all matters pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic. We encourage our loyal patrons, filmmaking friends, dedicated staff and social followers to do the same, including social-distancing and home-stay measures in a consolidated effort to help control the spread of the virus.

We are continuing to work towards the planned 2020 festival dates of August 28-30; conditional upon public health and safety conditions and government-mandated directives.

Therefore, Program Director Simon Foster, with the support of the Festival Director Tom Papas and the organisational team, has decided to not take any further submissions for the 2020 program beyond the now final deadline of 11.59pm AEDT on Sunday, April 5.

"We currently have a record number of submissions, whether they be feature, short, student or animated films," says Foster. "It is heartbreaking to have to suspend the submission process, but it would be unfair to continue to take fees at a time when there is so much uncertainty and prospect of delay."

The festival acknowledges that some filmmakers may currently be in post-production or working towards the previously outlined deadlines. If that is your situation and you do still wish to submit in the months ahead, please contact the Program Director at simon@scififilmfestival.com with your production details.

The team here at The SciFi Film Festival thank you for your understanding and hope you and your loved ones keep a healthy mind and body in these trying times.
DEADLINE APPROACHING! March 31 is the 'regular deadline' for the 2020 SciFi Film Festival. NOW is the time to be prepping your submission details and getting your project to us at our FilmFreeway page, https://filmfreeway.com/SciFiFilmFestival . In 2019, we premiered such works as A Living Dog, The Final Land and Norman - works that have gone onto award-winning slots in Berlin, Boston and London. SUBMIT NOW!
