With unfettered access to the Zappa Vault, and the archival footage contained within, Zappa explores the private life behind the mammoth musical career that never shied away from the political turbulence of its time.
Trippy, critical lyrics and a boundless musical sense of adventure were two of the basic elements of Frank Zappa’s artistic universe. The self-taught virtuoso with the unmistakable moustache could play any instrument and released over 60 albums during his far too short life. The director Alex Winter has been given unique access to Zappa’s personal treasure trove of an archive, and what he has found has been turned into a hugely entertaining and wildly inspiring film. Completely in Zappa’s maximalist spirit. For if there was one thing that united his unruly opus, it was the defence of artistic freedom, whatever the cost may be. (CPH:DOX)
“There’s material here that even the most obsessive Zappa devotee has never seen, yet it’s presented in such a way that it just might inspire a new generation of fans.” — Boston Hassle
Co-presented with Groovescooter.
Zappa is screening as part of Antenna Selects, a curated selection of physical screenings and events, bringing Sydney audiences some of the best international documentary premieres right through to May 2021.

Sergio is a Chilean spy. Sort of. At least, he is offered the role of one after a casting session organized by Detective Romulo, a private investigator who needs a credible mole to infiltrate a retirement home. Romulo’s client, the concerned daughter of a resident, suspects her mother is being abused and hires him to find out what is really happening.
However, Sergio is 83, not 007, and not an easy trainee when it comes to technology and spying techniques. But he is a keen student, looking for ways to distract himself after recently losing his wife. What could be a better distraction than some undercover spy action? While gathering intelligence, Sergio grows close to several residents and realizes that the menacing truth beneath the surface is not what anyone had suspected.
Maite Alberdi’s The Mole Agent is a stylish combination of an observational documentary and a spy movie, with sleek camerawork and wonderfully watchable characters. It’s a unique meditation on compassion and loneliness that will infiltrate your heart and never let go. (Sundance Film Festival)
The Mole Agent is screening as part of Antenna Selects, a curated selection of physical screenings and events, bringing Sydney audiences some of the best international documentary premieres right through to May 2021.

PROVOCATION & DISRUPTION celebrates boundary-shattering films through Japanese cinematic history, notoriously recognised for their offbeat, rebellious and eye-opening qualities. With a spotlight on some of Japan’s leading experimental filmmakers working within the zeitgeist of their time, this series presents the visually audacious and sonically shocking—from Japanese New Wave and avant-garde activity during the 1960s and 1970s to gritty cyberpunk and brilliant psychedelic expressions of the late 1980s and early 2000s.
This free Classics program is part of the annual Japanese Film Festival presented by The Japan Foundation, Sydney and made possible by The Japan Foundation Film Library.

Life behind the walls of an Italian sect of Catholic kung fu monks, who live in an isolated world on a strong diet of martial arts, spirituality, and occult rituals.
They call themselves the ‘warriors of light’ – a small, secluded sect of Catholic kung fu monks, who have isolated themselves in a remote monastery in rural Italy. Here, they practice their own strange fusion of rigourous martial arts and religious asceticism under the leadership of the monastery’s mysterious guru. But behind their quest for spiritual peace is a haunting group culture, where the members are exposed to sadistic training exercises and psychological terror. The director Valentina Pedicini has been given unlimited access to observe the rituals, and routines of the monks, whose growing unrest is captured in stoical black-and-white images. (CPH:DOX)

From world-renowned filmmaker Hubert Sauper – director of Sundance winner We Come as Friends and the Oscar-nominated Darwin’s Nightmare – comes Epicentro, an immersive and metaphorical portrait of post-colonial, “utopian” Cuba, where the 1898 explosion of the USS Maine still resonates. This Big Bang ended Spanish colonial dominance in the Americas and ushered in the era of the American Empire. At the same time and place, a powerful tool of conquest was born: cinema as propaganda. In Epicentro, Sauper explores a century of interventionism and myth-making together with the extraordinary people of Havana – particularly its children, who he calls “young prophets” – to interrogate time, imperialism, and cinema itself.
“A remarkable fluidity and gracefulness that’s consistently engaging and surprising.” – The Hollywood Reporter

Everything you’d like to know about money in a funny and thorough film, which goes to the source and asks the capitalists themselves. They have all the answers – at least sometimes.
Inequality is growing. The crises of the banks are paid for by customers. Money is rising to the top, but the planet’s resources are being depleted. But why things are like this is another matter, and if you listen to the people who think that the economy is completely incomprehensible, then Oeconomia is just the ticket – and on top of it all it’s quite funny! With German thoroughness and great amounts of humour and creativity, we are taken into the heart of a world of glass and concrete, where economists, bankers and CEOs with varying success try to explain the capitalist game. The director Carmen Losmann uses graphic animations to illustrate the ideas, and lets the camera roll in the interviews as even the people at the very top get confused with the terminology, as they try to explain where money comes from, where it is going, and why growth is the dominant paradigm of our times. The open question is whether there is an alternative any longer. We can already look forward to Losmann hopefully following up his new film with a sequel. (CPH:DOX)
