Kidnapped by FARC, a drug cartel in Colombia, father, husband and beloved environmental journalist Tom Hargrove is held for a $6,000,000 ransom. A turbulent government and threats of guerrilla warfare stop the US government and Hargrove’s workforce from engaging in open dialogue, leaving all negotiations to be facilitated by his family. Miles Hargrove, Tom’s son, captured the gruelling process all on film.
20 years since the incident, Miles and his family have collated, processed and presented the event in a true crime, found-footage documentary unlike any other put to screen. The impulsive decision-making, psychological trauma and unrelenting love of the family come to life in raw, emotional and breathtaking cam-corded footage. An extraordinary feat of documentary filmmaking, Miracle Fishing is an astonishing act of cinematic catharsis that only the Hargroves can ever understand.

The formula for the perfect murder is in the hands of Gillian Wallace Horvat. She stars in, directs and writes this debut feature surrounding the inspired acts of a semi-fictionalised version of herself in the pursuit of the perfect murder. This distinctly original meta-narrative deals with a crazed protagonist’s desire to become a filmmaker at all costs. Using the barrier of the camera and creative licence, the film captures her hilarious and terrifying pursuit to become the filmmaker the world wants her to be.
Alongside searing dark comedy, Horvat holds an acute magnifying glass to the film industry and the experience of women in the medium. I Blame Society puts us in the driver’s seat of a fierce visionary pushed over the edge.

Director Martin Laroche joins us for a live digital Q&A, hosted by FFFA Artistic Director Hudson Sowada.

A civil war shakes Canada. Valérie is the sole survivor of a mass execution in which her boyfriend is killed. Years later, she’s in a new relationship. At the Long Term Care Centre where she works as a caregiver, she befriends Jeanne, a well-read and witty resident. What ensues is a surreal journey that mixes grounded realism with the bizarre as the lines between time, reality and identity blur.
In a time when social unrest and division is the norm, it’s not so far-fetched to imagine the ‘free world’ turning on each other and committing atrocities in the streets. With a sensibility reminiscent of the works of David Lynch and Charlie Kaufman, the stage is set for Léane Labrèche-Dor’s spellbinding performance in a film that explores survivor’s guilt, the grieving process, the distance of time, the power of love, and the joy of being alive.

Director Ben Hozie joins us for a live digital Q&A with filmmaker and programmer Kai Perrignon. Co-presented by Static Vision & Trash Night
***
The pale blue light of computer monitors illuminate the grungy corners of New York. Professional online gambler Jack becomes obsessed with a San Franciscan cam-girl, Scarlet, played by a bewitching Julia Fox (Good Time). Conversations between them soon deepen and the customer-client line blurs. But it’s a chance encounter in Chinatown that takes this relationship to its boiling point.
Director Ben Hozie interrogates the nature of online relationships in this transgressive modern erotic parable. With quirky humour the film explores digital fantasy and the existential isolation of a digital world. The two leads bring this immersive vision of New York to life and ask us to ponder the meaning of love when connection is just one click away.

Fear of the void. The dark consciousness of human brutality. Russian filmmaker Elem Klimov presents us this hallucinogenic horror in a newly restored form. The events of 1943, as the Nazis marched through Belerus, are reimagined through the eyes of a naive boy, bewildered by the honour of defending his country. The torture of war seeps into his skin rotting the core of any sense of romanticism in victory, violence or nationalism.
This groundbreaking work is a dizzying achievement in cinematography and sound design, led by a pulsing soundtrack by Oleg Yanchenko. Unrelenting and precise, Come and See is a timeless masterpiece of horror and anti-war cinema.

Evelyn, a nurse from the Philippines, moves in to care for Dena, an elderly woman ill with dementia. When Evelyn’s nephew, Amos, is forced to come and stay with them, he develops a connection with Dena’s enigmatic son. Mysterious forces haunt Dena, and her violent hallucinations begin to hint at a dark secret lurking in the house. As the two broken families find themselves dangerously isolated under one roof, Evelyn uncovers a haunting truth that threatens to resurrect everyone’s past traumas.
Desolate south Texas sets the stage for this unique clash of Americana and Filipino heritage. A refreshingly unconventional cast plays out this ghost story and reminds us of the strength within those who society often overlooks.

Acclaimed guitarists Slava & Leonard Grigoryan have expanded their creative output by crafting and recording the soundtrack to the big-hearted, award-winning indie film, ‘A Boy Called Sailboat’, performed as a live soundtrack to the film on stage at SWIFF ‘21.
This heart-warming, delightfully original family film set in a small town in New Mexico, was written and developed by Melbourne-based creative team Cameron Nugent and Andrew Curry, and stars Academy Award® winning actor J.K Simmons, Noel G, Elizabeth De Razzo, Jake Busey, Lew Temple and newcomer, Julian Atocani Sanchez in the title role.
Sailboat (Sanchez), a young boy living in the drought-ridden Deep South, brings love and hope to a family who have forged a simple and wholesome life. One afternoon he brings home a “little guitar” to his family. From this moment, Sailboat and his little guitar are inseparable, and when his ailing grandmother asks he write a song just for her, Sailboat creates a magical piece that delivers well past his close-knit family unit to an unimaginable global phenomenon.
Blending a sweet-natured atmosphere with an incredible Latin-themed soundtrack, ‘A Boy Called Sailboat’ provides audiences a chance to hear and see the Grigoryan Brothers like never before.
Film with live performance will be followed by a Q&A with Director, Cameron Nugent, and musicians, Slava & Leonard Grigoryan.
Theatre doors will open from 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start. Show will run for approx. 2 hours, including Q&A, with no intermission.

Co-presented by Static Vision.

Are we living in a simulation? Is the world around us fabricated? Where does virtual reality stop and the real world begin? These questions, consolidated through simulation theory, have existed on the fringes of popular culture and have been building momentum for years. From Plato’s cave to Elon Musk’s Twitter feed, the film is a staggering synthesis of perspectives that capture a poignant 21st century existential crisis.
As demonstrated in his previous film, Room 237, acclaimed director Rodney Ascher is no stranger to left-field ideas. He uses voices on the fringes to uncover deeply human anxieties, drawing on a variety of sources from conspiracy theorists to scientists and philosophers, to craft a conceptual, considered and sensitive trip down the rabbit-hole.

After a great first night the next installment of SEQUEL A THON is in!
Shorts are due Friday April 23. Screening is Tuesday April 27 (The last Tuesday of every month)
Sequel-a-thon screens a selection of 5 minute short films and tv shows and asks the audience to vote on which get to live on as new episodes and which get cancelled. The next month we do it all over again. It’s crazy, it’s manic, it’s raw and it’s fun.
If you are at all familiar with Channel 101 (the Dan Harmon event which spawned the Lonely Island, Rick and Morty, and the Sarah Silverman Show + More) this is basically EXACTLY THE SAME except because it’s filmmaking we get to call it an HOMAGE. Consider us the Quentin Tarantino of monthly film festivals. (We would have liked to have hosted Channel 101 Australia but they didn’t reply to our emails)
So here’s what you need to do (RIGHT NOW):
MAKE a short film/tv show (under 5 minutes)
SUBMIT it to sequelathon@gmail.com by April 23
ATTEND the screening at the Chippo Hotel basement on April 27
VOTE for your favourite shows and films
DO IT all over again each month.
This is a great opportunity to put your ideas to screen, to get feedback, to workshop scenes and ideas, and to meet other people. It’s like a gym for storytelling. Hopefully there will also be FUN along the way but we can’t promise it.
TICKETS ARE FREE. SUBMITTING IS FREE. DREAMS ARE FREE.
Book your spot tonight and enjoy the best night of live pre-recorded entertainment in Sydney!

Everything you’d like to know about money in a funny and thorough film, which goes to the source and asks the capitalists themselves. They have all the answers – at least sometimes.
Inequality is growing. The crises of the banks are paid for by customers. Money is rising to the top, but the planet’s resources are being depleted. But why things are like this is another matter, and if you listen to the people who think that the economy is completely incomprehensible, then Oeconomia is just the ticket – and on top of it all it’s quite funny! With German thoroughness and great amounts of humour and creativity, we are taken into the heart of a world of glass and concrete, where economists, bankers and CEOs with varying success try to explain the capitalist game. The director Carmen Losmann uses graphic animations to illustrate the ideas, and lets the camera roll in the interviews as even the people at the very top get confused with the terminology, as they try to explain where money comes from, where it is going, and why growth is the dominant paradigm of our times. The open question is whether there is an alternative any longer. We can already look forward to Losmann hopefully following up his new film with a sequel. (CPH:DOX)
“A dry-sounding documentary that proves to be surprisingly nimble and absorbing.” – Screen Daily
“A thoroughly researched, engaging… and thought-provoking documentary.” – Cineuropa
Oeconomia is screening as part of Antenna Selects, a curated selection of physical screenings and events, bringing Sydney audiences some of the best international documentary premieres right through to May 2021.

Mayor is a real-life political saga following Musa Hadid, the Christian mayor of Ramallah, during his second term in office. Surrounded on all sides by Israeli settlements and soldiers, most people in Ramallah will never have the chance to travel more than a few miles outside their home, which is why Mayor Hadid is determined to make the city a beautiful and dignified place to live. His immediate goals: repave the sidewalks, attract more tourism, and plan the city’s Christmas celebrations. His ultimate mission: to end the occupation of Palestine. Made over two years, the film follows charismatic yet beleaguered Mayor Hadid as he tends to his hometown during one of the most tumultuous times in Palestine’s history. Combining the neorealism of a Rossellini film with the absurdist humour of Veep, Mayor offers a portrait of dignity amidst the madness of endless occupation while posing a question: how do you run a city when you don’t have a country?
“Gripping and surprisingly witty… Astonishing.” – Variety
“Blends black comedy and unnerving suspense for a fascinating look at life under occupation.” – IndieWire
Mayor is screening as part of Antenna Selects, a curated selection of physical screenings and events, bringing Sydney audiences some of the best international documentary premieres right through to May 2021.
